The Willingness Practice and Fear of Future Events

Jul 25, 2019 | The Willingness Practice

Today I thought I’d share a little practice I use in response to particular types of fear.

This isn’t spiritual bypassing.

If fear from the past is showing up to be heard with loving compassion and supportive holding, that’s a different thing to what I’m talking about here.

This practice here is for when we are thinking thoughts about the future that we don’t want to be thinking, that lead to fear.

That might be fear of having no money, or fear of losing something, or fear of something you don’t want to happen, happening.

The first step is always some empathy.

So, the thought might be, “I’m scared of xyz.”

The first step would be some inner empathy,

“I hear that you’re feeling scared of xyz sweetheart, and I’m here and I’m listening.”

Compassion comes first.

The next step is to turn what you don’t want around into what you do want.

How you do this depends on whether the thing you’re scared of will definitely happen or not.

So, let’s start with something that could happen but we don’t want to happen.

That might be fear of getting sick.

The getting sick will not definitely happen, so you can connect with what you do want instead,

Which might be, “I want to be well and healthy.”

The next step is connecting with willingness.

I find that even moving from repeatedly thinking about what I don’t want and feeling fearful, to connecting with what I do want instead, already helps things shift.

Finding willingness also means being open to leads that support us in our willingness, for example to things that will help us stay healthy.

So that’s the practice around things that might possibly happen but might now.

However, there are some things in life that will happen, or are very likely to happen.

For example, “I’m scared of dying.”

You might turn that around to,

“I want that when I’m ready to die, I’ve come to a place where I feel deeply comfortable with the process and actually excited for the next step on the adventure.”

Then we can connect in with our willingness and the relief that comes with that.

Then, whenever the fear-thought shows up, we can connect with our willingness for a different experience.

That willingness also helps keep our openness to following leads for information or resources to help us with what we’re willing for.

That could include help with hearing and healing if the fears do come from past experiences.

I know for myself that there are several times in my life where I clearly kept on repeating fear thoughts, and those feared things came about.

Being compassionate with the fear that’s created through thinking, and then connecting with what we’re actually wanting and willing for instead is a powerful act.

Life responds to our Willingness.
